Do you ever have those moments where you suddenly remember something from your childhood? Like a movie you haven't seen since you were 5? Or a particular dish your mom used to make that you haven't tasted in years? These memories might come to you because you've just tasted something remarkable similar or heard a few bars of the main theme from the movie. Or they might just pop into your head for no reason at all.
I often have these moments. I am nostalgic about my childhood. Perhaps it is because I am a Taurus. My parents have often looked strangely at me when I say how much I loved my childhood and I can see in their eyes how they are going over all the things they think they did wrong as parents. Still, I maintain that my childhood was fabulous. I mean, I grew up in the 80's, best decade to be under the age of 12 EVER!!
I often have memories pop into my head from childhood that immediately send me looking for something to maintain the nostalgic feeling. I rewatch that movie or I'll make that dish. Sometimes however, I can not find what I am looking for. Like that amazing cartoon version of The Seven Swans that I watched over and over and over again the Christmas I was four and I drank 2 liters of eggnog in half an hour and spent the rest of the day curled in the big chair puking my guts out and watching that movie. Or eating that $5 jungle peanut butter cup raw food goodie that tasted SO much like the chocolate I used to eat at home as a kid and that I can not for the life of me replicate.
One of these elusive memories is a poster that I had on my wall as a child. I have thought about this poster probably once or twice a year since I was 12. I LOVED that poster. I have no idea what happened to it, I was too young to really care about where my stuff ended up when we moved. I have often gone looking for it, in poster stores, on-line. All I remember was how much time I spent starting at it. You see it is a picture of a unicorn standing by a small stream in the forest. At the unicorns feet is a snake. They appear to be in conversation and I spent many hours telling myself stories about what they were saying to each other.
For no reason at all today I thought about that poster again. I went looking. And this is what I found.
Yippeee!! I will be ordering this poster soon.
I guess childhood memories do come true...
BTW~ If anyone knows of the version of The Seven Swans movie that I mentioned please let me know!! It was produced between 1978-1985, it was animated, it may have had a title that was a variation on this story (The Swan Brothers, 7/11/12 Swans, etc), and it had these awesomely horrid scenes of the sister picking nettles and getting blisters and being tortured with needles during her trial (these scenes stand out for me because no other "kids" version I have ever seen portrayed these aspects of the original story)

Strangely, I HAD this image as a kid. I think as a poster! (Child of the 70's.) I think my mum bought it for me. I also had a unicorn journal.
I also remember this poster as a child. Do you know where I can get one? Thanks
I actually have a copy of this poster. But mine isn't a poster. it's like a print on wood with like a thick clear coating on it... Hard to explain. I got it for christmas when i was 8 from my bio-dad. It's currently hanging in my living room. I love it so much! I just now thought to try to find out about it.
I have been hunting for this image since the Internet showed up. I had a copy of this framed on my wall when we lost everything in an apartment fire. I'd never been able to find it again, I'm soooo happy searched again today and found this. YAY! Wherever did you find this image? I would love to be able to get another copy of it to hang up again.
Isn't this poster from a book? I remember it from my elementary library; it was my favorite one. It had an evil snake that at first was very small, but then grew and poisoned the water of the forest. The unicorn had to fight it to purify the water. I remember because I had never seen a picture of a unicorn bleeding before. And I remember the movie. I'm also looking for it. I believe it was actually an anime, technically.
I had this same poster! Like you, I have been searching to find another one. That's how I found your blog : ) Where can you get one?!
I'm so pleased to find your post! I just had the same experience. My husband made an offhand comment about a photo I took of him: that he looked like a 10 year old girl waiting for a unicorn (don't ask). I suddenly remembered I had a poster of a unicorn. Then tonight I remembered there was a snake! I googled "unicorn poster snake" and voila! Thank you.
I had this poster too, framed! I loved it so much I drew it & then removed the horn, & painted it with the horse being brown for art class in high school.
I also had this poster as a pre-teen/early teen and have thought about it many times over the years. It hung on my bedroom door and I always loved the graceful stance of the unicorn, playfully prancing about at the edge of the water and encountering this snake. It's an important memory from my youth, and I would very much like to get another poster like it.
My Dad gave me this poster framed in glass. One of the many things my Mother made me dispose of to one of my neices who was younger. Yeah, they really appreciated it - don't even know what happened to it.
Story of my life - i just found a salt & pepper shaker online that my DH got rid of for me - I bought it back.
Now I want to find this poster - I know I probably won't get a framed version as nice as I had but I would like to have the poster back - I don't have that much from my Dad and both parents are long gone.

I used my babysitting money (or birthday card money) for this poster - it was about $12.00 at the time and I remember where I purchased it. I thought it was the most beautiful artwork I had ever seen (hee, hee). Love that you posted this. I recently came across this image somewhere on the internet and I was immediately transported back to being about 11 or 12 years of age. Lol. Thanks for the reminder and love your blog.
Gah! I had this as a kid as well! Loved it! Do you know where it can be purchased?
I also had this poster as a kid and loved it so much, but it was lost as things from our childhood often are. For years I looked for it online and never found it. Then one day at a rummage sale I found a tapestry, unrolled it and there it was! My unicorn with snake poster but even better as a tapestry..I think I paid a few bucks for it! I'd still love to find the poster.
I still have the tapestry of this photo as a matter of fact it is hanging on my wall right now I've had it since I was born and I was born in 83
My son said, one xmas season, he wanted a tapestry, for his wall. So we go to Value Village and found a tapestry of this painting. It's fabric...kinda fuzzy. So, I'm just googling looking for its origin :)
I have the cotton tapestry and was wondering how much it's worth. If anyone knows please email at trishc1387@gmail.com. Thanks
Wow! I bought this poster back in the 70s. I think I was still a teenager when I bought it at the mall. I had a real serious unicorn phase for about ten years. Had pictures, stuffed animals, prints, rings, necklaces, candles, and THIS POSTER. I loved it. But for a while I had some things in a storage room while I was moving, and the poster got ruined. I was heartbroken and have thought about it often all these years since! I know a lot of people have asked you if you know where to get one. I didn't see an answer, but I'm going to try to find one. It was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever seen, and I still want to have it on my wall.
Okay, just found this poster at both Amazon and moviepostershop dot com. According to one or the other, the poster was from 1980. I could have sworn I bought it in the 70s, but I guess I'm wrong. But it's out there & available for anyone who wants to replace their. Which I'm about to do right now!
I actually just found a gorgeous framed poster copy of this at the Goodwill yesterday and immediately purchased it! I like to do a little research on things and came across your blog. Here is some helpful info:
Artwork by Johfra Bosschart in 1980
You can buy the poster on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Unicorn-27-40-Movie-Poster/dp/B000KA401A
Also... was this the animated movie about the swans you were looking for?

Cheers!
I’m searching for the same book! I think however you’re thinking of the movie The last Unicorn, which is a classic and well worth a visit.
Thank you Thank you! I have this poster as well (child of the 70s). When moving years ago my husband’s grandmother took it down to pack and folded it. Now it has large creases in it. I have been looking for a new copy for 25 years! Just ordered it from Amazon based on info provided above.

Just found out, it's by Johfra Bosschart
Me too! I found one of these at an estate sale and just went down the same rabbit hole. Posted a story about it on my insta thingsididn.tbuy
Thank you my parents had this as a large wooden painting 6×4ft and had a small golden clock included at the far right corner it was awe inspiring but when we moved to apartments there was no room and my dad threw it away or something. Been looking for something similar since finding childhood photos of it.
I have this in a frame
You have described my exact situation! Born in 1976 I two had this exact same poster hanging above my bed when I was 10 years old. I would imagine the same thing. What are they thinking? Are they friends or is the unicorn frightened and will gallup away soon. That poster gave me such joy in such a wonderful time of my life that I have been longing to have it back in my life in my adult years at 47 years old. I’m ecstatic that it still exists, and that there are so many others out there just like us who adore this print.
I actually mounted this poster on a big piece of wood and poured resin on it in the 1970's. When I moved from Arkansas City, Kansas, I sold it to a fellow. Wouldn't it be something if it were the same one...lol
